ARCHIVED - Murcia presents only the second basketball court in Spain to be made of recycled glass
Over 18 tons of glass were used to manufacture the eco-friendly court at the Príncipe de Asturias pavilion
The first ever basketball court made from recycled glass in Murcia was officially opened and presented on Tuesday outside the Príncipe de Asturias sports pavilion in the regional capital, where some of the UCAM Murcia CB squad took time out from training to show off their skills on the innovative eco-friendly surface.
The laying of the court was made possible by the collection of over 18 tons of glass in special basketball-shaped containers throughout the Region of Murcia during the “Encesta vidrio, ganamos todos” initiative, which was launched in 12 of the Region’s 45 municipalities. In fact, this is only the second court of its kind in the whole of Spain, the other one being in the Casino de la Reina park in Madrid, and is produced entirely from recycled glass apart from a layer of resin on the surface.
The court is 28 metres long and 15 metres wide and signals a further step forward in terms of recycling in the city of Murcia, where the district of La Flota is soon to become the first in the regional capital to be equipped with the new brown rubbish containers for organic waste only.
Final data are not yet available for 2019 but it is anticipated that the amount of glass recycled in the city of Murcia alone was higher than the figure of 6 million tons reached in 2018, and when the waste collected in the blue paper and cardboard containers and the tins and plastics in the yellow bins are taken into account the total of recyclable materials collected was well over 20,000 tons.
