Murcia's economy is booming, but its debt bill keeps climbing too
The Region posted Spain's strongest GDP growth in 2025, while also becoming the country's second most indebted community
It's a strange sort of year for Murcia's finances. On one hand, the Region's economy grew faster than anywhere else in Spain in 2025, expanding by 3.8%, well ahead of the national average of 2.6%. On the other, new figures from the Bank of Spain show Murcia has become the second most indebted autonomous community in the country, trailing only the Valencian Community.Let's start with the good news. According to the Regional Centre of Statistics, based on INE data, Murcia's economy grew in nominal terms by 6% compared to the previous year, now making up 2.7% of national GDP. Employment rose 3.5%, which translates to around 24,000 new jobs, and GDP per capita reached €28,087, a year on year rise of 4.7%. That figure still sits at 82% of the Spanish average, but the trajectory is clearly upward, with prices in the Region also rising more slowly than the national rate.
Now for the less comfortable picture. Murcia's public debt has reached €14.254 billion, equivalent to 30.8% of regional GDP, the third consecutive quarterly rise. Split evenly across the Region's 1,604,043 residents, that works out at €8,886 for every man, woman and child. The figure is actually slightly down from 31% in the first quarter, and still below the pandemic era peak of 33.5% in 2020, but the overall trend since 2008 has been relentless. Back then, Murcia owed just €755 million.
Former Regional Minister Luis Alberto Marín has long argued the real culprit is Spain's regional financing system, insisting that "as long as the current regional financing system remains unchanged, it will be impossible to reduce the debt." He puts the shortfall at around €650 million a year over the past decade. A commissioned report from the Valencian Institute of Economic Research backed that view, attributing 95.5% of Murcia's debt to underfunding.
Not everyone agrees. The Region's own College of Economists has pointed out that underfunding doesn't explain everything, and PSOE deputy Alfonso Martínez Baños was blunter still, arguing that "the reality is that most of it has to do with mismanagement of public resources, with the waste caused by corruption, and an inefficient production system."
There is one piece of relief on the horizon. The Spanish Government has proposed a partial debt forgiveness scheme that would cut Murcia's debt by €3.318 billion, a reduction of nearly 26%, though it still needs approval from Congress before anything changes. For now, Murcia finds itself in the odd position of being one of Spain's fastest growing economies and one of its most heavily indebted regions, all at the same time.
