ARCHIVED - New Covid vaccination record set in Spain over the weekend
Almost 800,000 more doses administered and 29 per cent of the population have received at least one
After a slow start the Covid-19 vaccination campaign is now gathering considerable momentum in Spain, and following the administration of another 782,492 doses over the weekend the number of people in this country to have received both jabs (or the single-dose Janssen product) now stands at over 6.2 million, equivalent to 13.1 per cent of the population.
At the same time, the new vaccination record set over the weekend leaves the total to have received at least one dose, and therefore to be at least partially protected from infection with coronavirus, at almost 13.8 million, or 29.1 per cent of the population, and if the current rate of immunization continues it is estimated that within 100 days a far more “normal” degree of social activity will become feasible.
During last week 2.7 million vaccines doses were used, another new record in this country, but it is still the case that the progress is rather uneven from region to region. Taking into account only the population aged over 16 (who are scheduled to be vaccinated) the proportion to have received at least one dose ranges from 42.8 per cent in Asturias to just 29.5 per cent in Murcia, and similar discrepancies can be observed in the different age groups.
For example, while in Galicia 86 per cent of people in their sixties have received their first jab, in Murcia the equivalent proportion is 66 per cent and in the Comunidad Valenciana only 62 per cent.
Given the rate at which the rollout is now taking place these regional differences will no doubt be ironed out over the next few weeks, and the next milestone identified by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is to raise the number of people who are fully immunized to 10 million by the first week of June. Given the figures compiled over the weekend, this target now seems eminently attainable.
