New high-speed train line between Málaga and Barcelona coming this winter
Iryo will launch the daily train service between Andalucía and northern Spain on December 15
Travellers will soon be able to traverse Spain double quick with the launch of Iryo’s high-speed AVE rail connection between Barcelona and Málaga, set to hit the tracks this December 15.
This exciting new route will connect Andalucía with northeast Spain, offering two frequencies a day (one in each direction), seven days a week, with stops in Zaragoza, Madrid and Córdoba.
The journey between Málaga and Barcelona will take approximately 5 hours and 50 minutes, with departures from Barcelona at 11.50am and arrivals in Málaga at 5.42pm.
On the return journey, departures from Malaga will be at 11.35am, arriving in Barcelona at 5.37pm. With 336,530 seats available per year, passengers will have plenty of opportunities to experience the comfort and convenience of Iryo’s high-speed trains.
Iryo is offering competitive prices for this new route, with one-way tickets starting from 24, 44 and 64 euros, depending on the amenities and flexibility options. On weekends, the minimum round-trip price is 26.37 euros for the outward journey and 27.78 euros for the return journey.
And there’s no need to wait until December – tickets are already available for purchase online in advance.
This new route is Iryo's second connection linking the north with the south of Spain, following the successful launch of their Barcelona-Sevilla route in 2023. Iryo has also announced that they have already uploaded 70% of their tickets for travel throughout 2025 to their website, making them the first railway operator to open sales for next year.
The swift journey time will come as a relief to many passengers, who have been campaigning against many of the inordinately long trips between other major cities. Last month, the Association of Consumer and Users (Consumur) labelled Renfe’s service between Málaga and Murcia a “failure” – the rail journey takes almost 7 hours because it first has to travel north to Madrid.
