ARCHIVED - New quayside sculpture to welcome cruise ship passengers to Cartagena
The El Abrazo sculpture adorns the Juan Sebastián Elcano quay in the heart of Cartagena
Thursday March 31 saw the official unveiling of a new sculpture entitled “El Abrazo” (the hug, or the embrace) on the quay where cruise ship passengers arrive in Cartagena, the honours being performed by local Mayoress Noelia Arroya and the president of the regional government of Murcia, Fernando López Miras.
The sculpture has been donated by the Hispano-Judaic community and the José Sacal foundation of Mexico, named after the artist who created it. In this sense the gifts to the city are twofold, according to the Mayoress: not only the sculpture itself, but also a reminder of the historic links between Cartagena and the Sephardic Jews.
Around 500 years ago thousands of Sephardic Jews left Spain, mainly from the regions of Aragón and Castilla, via the port of Cartagena, and their legacy, language and customs still live on through their descendants.
