ARCHIVED - Over 160 earthquakes close to Granada since early December
Seismologists cannot rule out the possibility of a major quake as activity continues
Seismologists are reported to be unwilling to rule out the possibility that a major earthquake could be brewing close to the city of Granada following two months of almost constant tremors and minor quakes, the most powerful of which occurred on Saturday with a magnitude of 4.4 Mw.
The epicentre of this quake, like those of almost all of the other recent minor tremors, was west of the city centre in the area of Santa Fe, Atarfe and Chauchina, and in the three days since a further 100 or so aftershocks have been recorded. The most intense of these was one of 3.3 Mw on Monday, and in total there have now been well over 160 tremors nearby since the start of December including 7 this Tuesday morning alone.
The 4.4 Mw earthquake on Saturday has resulted in various reports of damage to buildings in and around Santa Fe and classes have been cancelled at local schools as a result. The tremor was felt as far away as Estepona, Torremolinos, Córdoba and Linares, and there are worries that a larger quake could be on the way similar to one measuring 6.3 in 2010, or another measuring 7.8 in 1954.
Fortunately, both of these earthquakes were located 650 kilometres beneath the Earth’s crust and practically no damage was caused at all.
70 years previously in 1884, however, another earthquake not far south of Granada in Arenas del Rey caused the loss of 839 lives.
In the light of recent events extra measurements are being taken in the area as seismologists attempt to evaluate whether activity is now decreasing or whether a major tremor is likely in what is known to be one of the most seismically active zones of the Iberian Peninsula. The mountains in this part of Spain are caused by the collision of the African and Euro-Asian tectonic plates, and this brings about many fault lines in the area.
