ARCHIVED - Parents of fined partygoers in Zamora request community service for their offspring
3,000-euro fines have been paid by all those attending an August macro-fiesta but the parents want extra punishment
A party which was held in the countryside of Zamora in western Spain between 7th and 9th August has resulted in 91 fines of 3,000 euros being imposed on the parents of young people who attended, and in addition some of the parents have now requested that their offspring be obliged to perform some kind of social work as in most cases, it’s the parents of the youngsters who have been obliged to pay the fines, not the perpetrators themselves.
The fiesta was publicized on social media and attracted party-goers from all over the surrounding area to the tiny hamlet of Vime de Sanabria, which has under 100 permanent residents. Having learnt of the event, as the publicity on social media wasn´t exactly subtle, the Guardia Civil set up checks and over the course of the weekend identified 118 people and issued a total of 162 fines, of which 102 were for failing to adhere to the rules established for preventing the spread of Covid-19.
Commenting on the incident this week, Clara San Damián of the regional government delegation in Zamora reported that all of the fines have now been paid, including one of 126,000 euros which was dished out to the organizer of the event, and that various parents have contacted the delegation to request that their children be punished further by an obligation to carry out community service. The payment of 3,000 euros, they feel, does not affect the youngsters directly enough, instead causing difficulties to the parents, and they would like to see their offspring paying something back to the community themselves to reinforce the seriousness of the offence and teach them a lesson .
The party in Vime de Sanabria is one of a total of 1,650 incidents which have so far been dealt with by the Delegación Territorial in Zamora in relation to the flouting of the Covid rules established, most of them (1,271) having been reported by the Guardia Civil and the others by the Policía Nacional (208), local police forces (157), the Servicio Territorial de Sanidad (13) and the Servicio Territorial de Cultura (1). In this context Sra San Damián reiterates that the situation in Zamora is “very worrying” and that nobody can be allowed the luxury of not taking the restrictions seriously.
