Police find body of teen who fell into the Mar Menor 3 weeks ago
The boy went missing in the waters of the lagoon after falling from a boat in the early hours of the morning
The Guardia Civil have located the lifeless body of teen Ivo Petrov, who disappeared in the early hours of January 5 in the waters of the Mar Menor. This Thursday, January 25, Spanish police found the body in those same waters.
After 21 days of searching, police located the young Bulgarian boy’s corpse, submerged at a depth of about five metres and at a distance of between 1,000 and 1,500 metres from the port of Los Alcázares. Divers from the Group of Specialists in Underwater Activities (GEAS) helped to locate and recover the body.
Ivailo, known to most as Ivo, disappeared in the Mar Menor after the boat which he was sailing with two other friends apparently capsized as they were heading to the Isla de la Perdiguera, a small volcanic island in the middle of the lagoon.
Ivo allegedly did not know how to swim very well and, although the other two boys were rescued alive, there was no trace of Ivo.
The Mayor of Los Alcázares, Mario Pérez Cervera, has decreed three days of mourning in the municipality and the flags will fly at half mast in the municipal buildings.
The mother of the 16-year-old Bulgarian, who lives in Los Alcázares, recently claimed that what happened on the night of the incident was not an accident.
“It seems that something else may have happened,” according to sources close to the woman.
The police investigations and the autopsy are now awaiting further developments. Ivo’s body was taken to the air base in Los Alcázares and later to the Forensic Anatomical Institute in Cartagena.
The main hypothesis for now is still the one initially maintained by the Armed Forensic Institute, which is accidental death.
