ARCHIVED - Rehabilitation work on Murcia Old Jail finally finished
The historic building first opened in the city of Murcia almost a century ago
The first phase of the rehabilitation work on Murcia city’s Old Jail (Cárcel Vieja) has been completed and the historic building is expected to be reopened before the end of this year, after the project was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This phase has allowed the main building of the provincial jail, which was first opened in 1929, to be recovered and now workers from the company in charge of the project, Orthem, are focusing mainly on cleaning tasks and finishing touches in order to finalise the rehabilitation of one of the city’s most emblematic structures.
In addition, the area surrounding the jail has been turned into an extension of the previously very narrow public pavement, which will be a welcome sight for locals as the building had been bordered by a fence for years, causing an eyesore in the city centre.
Murcia residents and tourists will soon be able to access the building, which is going to be turned into a cultural and artistic hub right in the centre of the city, with coworking spaces, a culture laboratory and art workshops in the reformed prison cells. However, the second phase of the project, which includes fitting the interior with lighting and furniture and making the space fit for the general public, still has to be finalised before this can happen.
