Urgent repair work has been completed in Lorca on the historic Porche de San Antonio, where the heavy rainfall this spring had caused structural damage.
Mayor Diego José Mateos explains that his council is fully committed to preserving the rich historical heritage of Lorca, and that in consequence there was no hesitation in investing 17,000 euros in the project. As well as the problem of damp in the walls, this money was spent on protecting the paintings of San Ginés de la Jara inside the structure.
The Porche de San Antonio is the only remaining medieval entrance gate left in the whole of the Region of Murcia and is just one of those which used to provide entrance through the city wall of Lorca. The tower was originally built by the Moors during their five-century occupation of Lorca and dates from the 13th or 14th century.
The door no longer remains and visitors can instead see only the restored tower, climbing up its winding staircase from Calle Gigante to Calle Zapatería. Inside is a mural showing San Ginés de la Jara, to whom the tower was dedicated by the Christians.
This is not the first time the Porche de San Antonio has been restored in recent decades: ti was reformed in the 1960's and again in 2005-2006, before sustaining considerable damage during the 2011 earthquake.
