ARCHIVED - Restoration for La Podadera gun battery in Cartagena
The site of La Podadera has been used to defend the port since the 17th century
The Ministry of Defence has informed the Town Hall of Cartagena that work is to be contracted by the Naval Arsenal in the city to protect the disused gun battery of La Podadera, which stands at the headland to the west of the entrance to the natural harbour of the city.
This follows calls for reinforcement of the structure from the AFORCA association, which represents veterans who served in the municipality’s fortresses and gun batteries and campaigns for the preservation and protection of military monuments in the area, and the Ministry’s announcement specifies that work will focus on the parts of the battery which are currently at most risk, including the wall of Aspilleras.
The numerous coastal gun batteries of Cartagena all officially enjoy protected status but many have fallen into disrepair over the years. However, the Ministry has recently restored part of the city wall of Carlos III next to the Navantia shipyard, and has now undertaken to do likewise at the Batería de la Podadera, where the project is budgeted at 80,000 euros.
While work is on-going the area will be cordoned off in order to prevent members of the public from accessing it, and once it is completed a complete restoration project is to be drawn up.
La Podadera is one of the oldest gun batteries in Cartagena, the history of the site dating back to the late 17th century, when the Duke of Veragua, Pedro Colón de Portugal, ordered the installation of four cannon there. Over the centuries it was reformed on various occasions and the building which stands there now in a state of disrepair was built in the late 19th century to house two steel 260mm Krupp cannon.
The building was declared an Item of Cultural Interest in 1985.
There are many fortifications protecting Cartagena from both inside the city and further along the coast. Most of the sites are accessible on foot after a hard struggle through overgrown brush and scrub, but some have been restored and can be visited more easily.
One of the most popular is Castillitos, accessed via Isla Plana: Click for background info
