ARCHIVED - Safety showers to prevent monster trees collapsing in Murcia City
Three years ago branches broke without warning on the monumental ficus tree in Plaza Santo Domingo
Murcia City Council is undertaking a “health check” on 700 specimen trees and the nearly 120,000 trees and palm trees that are in the public gardens of the municipality to check for stress and overall health ahead of the arrival of high temperatures
3 years ago branches on the monumental ficus tree in Plaza Santo Domingo in Murcia suddenly collapsed, injuring one person and terrifying others who were seated below drinking coffee in a plaza bar.
Since then, town halls in the region have been super-vigilant, cutting back the branches of the many giant trees which make public plazas such pleasant places to enjoy a relaxing drink, and undertaking comprehensive health checks throughout the year.
The collapse of the tree was attributed to the drought conditions of 2016/17 which had stressed the enormous tree and in Murcia City municipal workmen are watering the largest trees with a water cannon that reaches 20 meters in height, irrigating both the tops and the bases of the ficus in the Floridablanca Garden, Artillery Barracks and Santo Domingo to prevent a repeat of the incident.
The task of watering these monsters takes three hours a day, several times a week each, undertaken by specialist tree surgeons who, at the same time, evaluate any possible damage or alteration of the magnificent specimens that fill the centres of the city with cooling shade, oxygen and life.
The objective is to avoid possible dehydration that may cause a branch to split or collapse, caused by the soaring summer temperatures, which are usually the highest in the region.
