ARCHIVED - Saturday 15th February ENGLISH language tour: Gothic Jumilla
ARCHIVED ARTICLE A new tour for 2020 explores the mediaeval past of Jumilla
Gothic Jumilla
This tour takes visitors into the Gothic period of Jumilla (the 12th to 15th centuries), a time when the town was experiencing significant change due to the Reconquist, power switching from the Moors who had occupied large swathes of Spain for 500 years to Christian occupancy at the hands of the powerful landowners from Castile y Leon and Aragón, who reconquered the territories and consolidated them, the whole of Spain uniting into one at the end of the 15th century when the last of the Nazrid monarchs was finally forced out of Granada and the Reconquest was completed.
This tour visits the most important monuments from this period, including the castle, the remains of the ermita de Santa María de Gracia, la iglesia de Santiago and the remains of the church of la iglesia de Santa María del Arrabal, via the oldest street in Jumilla, the Callejón del Fiscal.
The tour takes around one and a half hours, so sensible shoes are recommended.
The tour costs 2.10 euros, as it includes a bus trip up to the castle and castle entry.
Following the visit to the castle, visitors will walk around 1km back down into the town via the Camino del Subidor to the church iglesia de Santiago, the Callejón del Fiscal and remains of the old church of Santa María del Arrabal.
After the tour, attendees will still have time to visit any of the wine bodegas in the town centre to purchase wine should they so wish. Click here for introduction to the wine bodegas of Jumilla.
This Gothic Route is offered in English on the 15th February and Spanish on the 16th February, starting from the Tourist Information Office at 11:00 on both dates.
