Seasonal fire station returns to Pilar de la Horadada for summer months

Mobile fire units, drone surveillance and night crews will also operate across Vega Baja from mid-June to mid-September

Emergency services across the Vega Baja region of Alicante are being strengthened for the summer months with a return of a seasonal fire station in Pilar de la Horadada, alongside extra crews, mobile units and drone surveillance.

The summer deployment, which runs from June 15 to September 16, is designed to improve response times during the busiest and highest-risk period of the year, particularly when extreme temperatures and tourist numbers put extra pressure on local services.

One of the key measures is the reinstatement of a fixed fire response point in Pilar de la Horadada, operating daily from 10am to 10pm.

The unit will be staffed by a corporal, three firefighters and a communications operator, with a dedicated vehicle on standby. It will respond to emergencies within the municipality and surrounding areas.

Officials from the Provincial Fire Consortium of Alicante explained that the station has become an important resource in reducing response times in a region that sees a major increase in population during the summer season.

Alongside the permanent base, mobile fire units will be deployed across different parts of Vega Baja on a rotating schedule, operating from 10am to 8pm.

These teams will vary in size depending on daily needs but will typically include a sergeant, between two and four corporals and up to twelve firefighters. Their role will focus on prevention work, rapid response to wildfires and supporting incidents during peak demand.

The summer plan also includes the use of forest surveillance drones, which will be used to detect smoke, hotspots and potentially dangerous situations in hard-to-reach areas more quickly.

Night-time fire crews will also be placed on standby in the event of dry thunderstorms, a weather phenomenon that can significantly increase the risk of wildfires. These teams will work in coordination with Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

A larger reserve of personnel will also be available throughout the summer to deal with major incidents, particularly during periods of extreme heat and high tourist activity.

Luis Rodríguez, the deputy responsible for the service, said the reinforcement is aimed at ensuring a faster and more effective emergency response during the summer months when risk levels are higher and demand increases significantly.
