The 2020 edition of the annual FITUR tourism fair, one of the largest events of its kind in the world, began on Wednesday in Madrid (although the doors will be opened to members of the public only at the weekend), and the Region of Murcia is present this year with a stand promoting various attractions of the Costa Cálida.
Among the events being highlighted are the Semana Santa celebrations of the city of Murcia, Cartagena, Lorca and Jumilla, all of which have been declared fiestas of international tourist interest with Jumilla having been added to the list last year. Each of these series of Easter Week processions has its own peculiar characteristics, with some of the stand-out features being the sculptural tableaux of Francisco Salzillo in Murcia, the military precision of the marching brotherhoods in Cartagena, the flamboyant spectacle and brilliant embroideries of Lorca and the 600 years of tradition embodied in the event in Jumilla.
Special attention is also being focussed at the Murcia stand this year on the Region’s gastronomy and wines, the Roman Theatre Museum in Cartagena, rural tourism, historical tourism and numerous fiestas, and on the first day the municipalities represented were those of Cartagena, Murcia, Caravaca de la Cruz, Yecla, Jumilla, Bullas, Lorca, La Unión, Cieza, Aledo and Mula.
Including both Spanish and international visitors the number of tourists staying in official tourist accommodation in the Region last year reached 1.7 million, and 56,000 people are employed in the sector, which has become one of the pillars of Murcia’s economy.
