ARCHIVED - Shallow water in the Mar Menor forces Ecologistas en Acción sailing boat to remain outside the lagoon
The Diosa Maat moored in San Pedro del Pinatar at the start of a summer environmental campaign
The sailing boat Diosa Maat, which belongs to Ecologistas en Acción, arrived in San Pedro del Pinatar at the northern end of the Mar Menor to begin its summer tour of some of the most problematic environmental hotspots along Spain’s Mediterranean coast, including the Ebro delta in southern Catalunya, and is reported to have been unable to enter the lagoon due to the shallowness of the water.
Ecologistas en Acción describe the deterioration of the marine environment of the Mar Menor as “a national disaster”, and explain that a draft of just 90 centimetres is too dangerous for their craft to enter the lagoon. At a press conference on Tuesday the organization lamented the lack of protection for the “jewel in the crown” of the Region of Murcia, blaming the alteration of water quality parameters on the “decision to turn the Campo de Cartagena into the market garden of Europe”.
Other factors mentioned in the changing nature of the lagoon included the growth of tourist developments, the construction of marinas, the dredging of the Canal del Estacio and the loss of the wetlands around the Mar Menor.
After visiting San Pedro del Pinatar the Diosa Maat will set sail for Valencia as the summer begins and the “Mediterráneo en Acción” campaign gets under way, and will return to the Costa Cálida later in the season to highlight more of the ecological concerns along the coastline of the Region of Murcia.
