ARCHIVED - Six-year-old boy dies from Covid in the Canary Islands
The child was one of two people who died from Coronavirus in the Canary Islands on the same day.
A 6-year-old boy in Tenerife has become one of the latest victims of the virus in the past 24 hours on the Canary Islands, while a 56-year-old man from Gran Canaria has also died.
.
The boy had “previous serious health problems,” according to the Ministry of Health.
The Canary Islands also reported 107 new infections over the previous 24 hours, with Tenerife showing the highest number of new cases with 64, followed by Gran Canaria with 33, Lanzarote with 11, and La Palma with two. Meanwhile the three cases previously reported in Fuerteventura have been discounted following an adjustment in the figures.
Across the Canaries there are currently 328 patients in hospital with the virus, 71 of them occupying intensive care units.
The accumulated incidence figures remain lower than across the rest of Spain, however with 85.57 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past 14 days and 39.16 per 100,000 in the past seven days. The national rate in Spain is now 189 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
From Monday evening the regional government of the islands abandoned plans to maintain a nocturnal curfew after the regional Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Canarias (TSJC) courts refused to permit an extension after the conclusion of the national state of alarm.
