ARCHIVED - Social security contributions for the self-employed in Spain are suspended for 6 months
Relief for autónomos as no interest or surcharges will payable on deferred contributions
One of the latest measures introduced by the Spanish government on Tuesday afternoon as part of the continuing attempts to soften the drastic impact of the coronavirus emergency on the economy of the country consists of the suspension of social security contributions by “autónomos” (the term for the self-employed in Spanish) for a period of six months.
The monthly quotas payable by all self-employed workers are effectively to be postponed for up to six months with no interest payable by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, a decision described by Nadia Calviño, the Minister for the Economy, as a moratorium without interest”. In principle the payments related to April, May and June are all included in all cases where workers have been obliged to cease their professional activities, but the postponement is not applicable to businesses where ERTE temporary employment regulation schemes have already been filed or to income periods which have already finished.
Self-employed workers will be able to apply for the postponement of payment during the first ten days of each month.
The move will generally be welcomed by the millions of self-employed in Spain after previous measures were announced in order to provide help for registered companies and their employees, causing complaints that sole traders had been largely forgotten by the government. In response to these criticisms Sra Calviño stated on Tuesday that the government understands them and recognizes that special measures are also required by this important sector of the workforce.
Nonetheless, there is still considerable resentment at the fact that the March social security quota has already been paid by “autónomos” all over Spain. Lorenzo Amor of the Federación de Autónomos (ATA) claims that the government has turned a blind eye to the calls for fairer treatment and “has today charged the quota to 3.2 million people”: in his view it has taken over two weeks and six Cabinet meetings for the government to react “late”, and the administration is continuing to improvise.
Other measures announced on Tuesday afternoon include a complete ban on evictions of the most vulnerable members of society for the next six months, the offering of interest-free loans in order to help tenants pay their rent and assurances that people made unemployed with no right to unemployment benefit are to be entitled to a supplementary benefit of 440 euros per month. In addition, a special package of aid for domestic workers made redundant during the emergency is to be made available.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
