ARCHIVED - Spain needs more intensive care nurses to cope with the coronavirus pandemic
A study by the General Council of Nursing (CGE) entitled 'Analysis of the situation in the Covid-19 Intensive Care Units' published on Tuesday, concludes that intensive care units (ICU) in Spain would need 4,000 Nursing professionals in the most optimistic scenario of the pandemic and 13,400 in the most pessimistic to face a continued coronavirus health crisis.
President of the Spanish Society of Intensive Nursing and Critical Units (SEEIUC), Marta Raurell, said that the word that defines the current feeling of professionals is "frustration" but also "exhaustion": "They feel like machines,” she said.
In Spain, 50% of ICUs have a ratio of one nurse for every two patients, and in the rest it is either one professional for every three patients or it varies depending on the shift or area of the service.
According to the CGE study, in a pessimistic scenario of the pandemic, in which all ICU beds were filled by coronavirus patients, between 11,900 and 13,426 more nurses would be needed than there are currently.
In an intermediate scenario -with 60% occupancy of intensive care beds- between 7,645 and 9,166 nurses would be required to be able to care for patients, while if the pandemic evolved better than expected, with a bed occupancy of 30%, between 4,462 and 5,983 more workers would be needed.
Before the pandemic, Spain had a total of 5,799 intensive care beds, which is equivalent to 12.41 per 100,000 inhabitants, of which 75.20% were from public hospitals. During the pandemic, that capacity was increased by 4,044 to 9,843 by using post-surgical beds. At the moment, ICU occupancy by Covid patients is 32.80%, with a total of 3,156 cases receiving ICU treatment across Spain.
The president of the CGE, Florentino Pérez, lamented the "deficient" situation of these units, and pointed out that during the first wave of the pandemic even nursing students had been brought in to try and cope with the overwhelming numbers of patients.
