ARCHIVED - Spain reaches record Covid vaccination level but the incidence rate remains at 230
Almost a quarter of the population have received at least one Covid vaccine dose
The data published throughout this week by Spain’s Ministry of Health appear to indicate that a peak has been reached in the fourth wave of coronavirus contagion which followed the Easter holidays, but despite the acceleration of the vaccination program the curve has not yet begun to show any definite downward trend.
The latest bulletin published on Thursday evening reported a 14-day incidence rate of 230 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for the second day running, with another 10,143 cases having been reported in the previous 24 hours. There were also 137 Covid-related fatalities, taking the official Ministry death toll since early last year to 78,080, and in many regions the strain being placed on health services remains extreme: in the country as a whole the proportion of beds in intensive care units occupied by Covid patients is just over 23 per cent, but in Madrid the equivalent figure rises to 44.4 per cent and in the Basque Country, Catalunya, Ceuta and La Rioja it is only a little under 40 per cent.
Similarly, the incidence rate is still above the “extreme risk” threshold of 250 in 7 of the 17 regions, namely the Basque Country (516), Madrid (388), Navarra (353), Cataluña (289), La Rioja (282), Aragón (283) and Cantabria (256).
At the other end of the scale, meanwhile, the Comunidad Valenciana remains alone in “low risk” territory with a 14-day rate of 44, while Murcia, Galicia and the Balearics all continue to record figures of under 100. The contrast among the regions is further illustrated by the fact that in the Comunidad Valenciana only 2.06 per cent of hospital beds are occupied by Covid patients, and in the ICUs of Murcia the proportion is just 3.79 per cent.
On the positive side, the latest daily update reports a new record in terms of vaccine doses administered, a further 481,910 jabs having been received during the previous 24 hours. This means that 11.5 million people in Spain, or 24.3 per cent of the population, have now received at least one dose of the vaccines, 4.4 million of them having received either both doses or the single-dose Janssen vaccine.
