ARCHIVED - Spike in Murcia ERTE furlough scheme applications following bar and restaurant closures
250 new applications between Monday and Wednesday this week and many more expected to follow
One inevitable consequence of the decision to close down all bars and restaurants in the Region of Murcia in an attempt to halt the spread of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic is that many of the businesses affected are again seeking the relief offered by the “ERTE” furlough schemes, and sure enough this week has seen a spike in the number of ERTE applications being made.
The shutters came down at bars and restaurants at midnight last Friday night, and between Monday and Wednesday this week a total of 250 ERTE applications were filed, affecting 1,077 employees. This represents more applications than in the whole of the month of October, and the figures are expected to continue to rise as the forced closure affects some 9,000 hostelries and around 35,000 employees, as well as 12,000 more people whose livelihoods are indirectly affected.
Following this sudden jump in ERTE activity there have been 328 applications in the first 11 days of November, affecting a total of 1,510 staff: almost all of the requests cite “force majeure” as the cause, the other ten being on account of “economic factors”.
Earlier in the year, when the first wave of the pandemic struck, approximately 15,000 businesses in the Region of Murcia initiated ERTE schemes when they found themselves obliged to send staff home during the initial spring lockdown. Of the 80,000 workers affected only 10,565 were still on furlough leave at the beginning of October.
