ARCHIVED - Summer archaeological excavation at Las Paleras in Alhama de Murcia
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Between July 12 and 25, excavations at Las Paleras in Alhama de Murcia continue
The archaeology camps in Alhama have been running every summer since 2000 and attract students and volunteers from all over the world. The Las Paleras site, which was a walled Moorish settlement between the end of the 8th century and the middle of the tenth, was first excavated in 2006 and lies below the mediaeval castle.
It's quite common for this type of location to have been used for early settlements as the site is strategic and offers protection as well as good visibility of the surrounding area. It's highly likely that an early simple fortification or "hisn", would have been built beneath the existing mediaeval castle, as is the case in several other areas of the region, offering protection for livestock and residents should danger threaten.
This year, a second dig will also take place at El Murtal on the Rambla de Algeciras, where settlements existed during the Bronze and Iron Ages, and which was first excavated in 2018. The Town Hall of Alhama de Murcia is heavily involved in the scheme, which aims to recover parts of the area’s historical heritage.
So far this year, semi-complete pieces of pottery lamps and grinding mills have been discovered in Las Paleras, and the archaeologists are working on clearing the paths and roads that once existed there.
As part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan, experts in the field are working to make the area of Las Paleras more attractive to visitors, by recreating one of the traditional homes at the site and building a performance area on which outdoor performances can be held and talks given.
The budget of the plan is €2.7 million, divided amongst all the projects that will be developed among the six municipalities of the Sierra Espuña which are working together to finance and develop the Plan.
At the El Murtal site, the work which began three years ago has continued in the northeast.
In an exciting development in the hidden history of the town, volunteers working at the Cabecico Redondo de La Muela discovered nine loom weights which points “to the existence of a community in the steep area and that encourages us to continue working in this sector", researcher at the University of Murcia, Benjamín Cutillas, explained.
