The best places in Spain to experience the 2026 total solar eclipse
Millions will look skyward on August 12 as Spain experiences its first total solar eclipse in more than a century

On August 12, 2026, Spain will become one of the most sought-after destinations on the planet for eclipse chasers.
For the first time in more than a century, a total solar eclipse will be visible from parts of the country, drawing astronomers, photographers and curious travellers from across Europe. Hotels in some areas are already reporting increased demand, and with good reason. A total eclipse is one of nature's most extraordinary spectacles.
The key word, however, is total.
Many areas of Spain, including Murcia, Alicante and Barcelona, will experience a very deep partial eclipse. Impressive as that sounds, eclipse enthusiasts will tell you there is a world of difference between 99% and 100%. Only within the path of totality will observers see the Sun's corona, experience the sudden darkness and notice the dramatic drop in temperature.
With that in mind, here are ten of the best places in Spain to witness the event.
1. Playa de Palma, Mallorca
Mallorca is expected to be one of the most popular destinations for eclipse tourism. The long stretch of coastline at Playa de Palma offers unobstructed views towards the western horizon, making it an excellent place to watch the eclipse unfold as the Sun approaches sunset.
2. Playa de la Malvarrosa, Valencia
Valencia sits directly in the path of totality and its famous city beach combines easy access with excellent viewing opportunities. Arrive early though, as huge crowds are expected.
3. La Muntanyeta dels Sants, Valencia
This small hill overlooking the rice fields of the Albufera Natural Park is already attracting attention from experienced eclipse observers. Its elevated position provides clear views across a remarkably flat landscape.
4. Cullera
Located just south of Valencia, Cullera lies close to the centre of the eclipse path. The combination of coastal scenery and open horizons makes it one of the strongest options on mainland Spain.
5. Ebro Delta, Tarragona
The Ebro Delta's vast open wetlands offer some of the clearest sightlines in the country. With very few buildings, trees or mountains blocking the view, it’s likely to become one of the most photographed eclipse locations in Spain.
6. Peñíscola, Castellón
Watching the eclipse beside one of Spain's most picturesque coastal castles could be hard to beat. The dramatic setting adds an extra dimension to what is already a rare event.
7. Onda Castle, Castellón
Perched above the surrounding countryside, Onda Castle offers panoramic views and has already been highlighted by local authorities as a prime observation point for the eclipse.
8. Sierra Calderona viewpoints
The mountains north of Valencia are home to several spectacular miradores. Higher ground often provides better visibility and can help avoid some of the haze that occasionally develops near the coast during August.
9. Vilanova i la Geltrú
Located south of Barcelona, this town sits close to the northern edge of the path of totality. It’s likely to attract many visitors who wouldn’t get as good a view if they stayed in the Catalan capital.
10. Ibiza
While Mallorca may receive most of the attention, Ibiza also offers exceptional viewing opportunities, particularly from its west-facing coastline where the eclipsed Sun will appear above the horizon shortly before sunset.
What about Murcia?
The Region of Murcia won't experience totality, but it will come very close.
Observers across Murcia are expected to see around 98% to 99% of the Sun covered by the Moon, depending on their exact location. While that will still create a noticeable dimming of daylight, it won't deliver the full eclipse experience.
For anyone determined to witness totality, the good news is that some of the closest locations are only a few hours away by car. Valencia, Cullera and several parts of Castellón are likely to become popular destinations for Murcian residents looking to make a day of it.
One final piece of advice: wherever you decide to watch from, don't leave planning until the last minute. Accommodation in prime viewing areas is expected to fill up quickly, roads may be busy and eclipse glasses should only be purchased from certified suppliers.
Spain won't see another total solar eclipse of this significance for many years. If the skies stay clear, August 12 could become one of the most memorable evenings many people will ever spend looking up at the sky.

The Astronomy and Science Centre Foundation has star-themed events and activities to delight novices and experts of all ages

Astronomy Tours runs a whole host of astronomical activities and events in the Murcia Region, from astronomical observation sessions to a magical cruise under the stars, to really fire up an interest in the cosmic world beyond our atmosphere.
Their main base of operations is the Finca Astronomica, located close to the town of La Aljorra in the Campo de Cartagena, where you can join their astronomy tours either in the daytime or at night, all year round.
At the Finca, you’re welcomed with delicious food, drinks, a bonfire and a variety of astronomical tools and gadgets. In the summer season, they also have tours in other locations, including San Pedro del Pinatar, La Manga and Camposol, not to mention their unmissable cruise under the stars, which involves a nighttime cruise on the Mar Menor with tapas and drinks, plus a guided presentation of the night sky as you watch the galaxy glide by.
The Astronomy Tours and the Finca Astronomica are supported by the Astronomy and Science Centre Foundation, which was founded in 2019 by a group of astronomers and Starlight-certified guides and monitors in the astronomical observatories in Spain. The purpose of the Foundation is to promote the knowledge and interest in the field of astronomy and astronomy-related sciences, which covers areas such as physics, chemistry, biology, geology, but also history, archeology, urban and medical aspects of social life, literature, art, culture and (of course) astrology.
By promoting this knowledge and getting their customers interested in astronomy, the Foundation hopes to achieve higher goals such as bringing the stars a little closer to people, and helping them to understand the importance of caring about our planet and the whole human population as a one.
To achieve those goals, the Foundation organises its day- and nighttime activities and camps which are suitable for both children and adults, and as well as this they work with
schools and organisations and write books for children to bring astronomy to the masses.
schools and organisations and write books for children to bring astronomy to the masses. As part of this mission, they’re creating an astronomically themed park right on the Costa Cálida called the Astronomy and Science Centre which has an observatory available to the public to see the stars and the planets, and where they also promote ecofriendly and sustainable activities and closeness to nature.
The Finca Astronomica even has its own friendly and well cared for animals which live in really big spaces where people can easily enter and interact with them in their own environment.
What’s more, you can get involved in all sorts of other fun and activities for all the family at the Finca Astronomica, including glamping under the stars, stroking the animals at their petting zoo and enjoying sports like darts, archery, nerf gun fights, and many more.
This year, Finca Astronomica is excited to unveil its very own Yurt Village. Alongside the beautifully crafted wooden glamping pods, the yurts combine traditional charm with all the modern comforts including double beds, cosy carpets and plenty of shelving for your personal belongings.
But that’s not all. Each yurt comes handily equipped with light and electricity, so that you can charge your devices even as you recharge your spirit under the vast, starry sky.
This summer season is about to come alive with regular tours happening three days a week, while Adult Only Fridays are just around the corner.
Tours are available in English, Spanish and Polish.
