New X-ray scanners will begin to arrive at airports across Spain from next year

These are the Spanish airports that will eliminate hand luggage liquid rules in 2024

Aena, the public company that manages airports in Spain, confirmed at the end of September that starting in 2024, it will not be necessary to remove liquids or laptops from carry-on suitcases when passing through security control. This is thanks to the introduction of X-ray scanners with 3D technology which allow airport personnel see exactly what we care carrying in our hand luggage.

This system is already in place in airports in the UK, the Netherlands, Finland and the US but in Spain, the first to trial the technology will be Barajas in Madrid and El Prat in Barcelona, beginning next year.

After that, the system will be rolled out at Palma de Mallorca Airport and at Málaga-Costa del Sol in 2025 but the likes of Gran Canaria, Tenerife South, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Alicante-Elche, Valencia, Ibiza, Menorca and Bilbao will have to wait until 2026 for their turn.

While the new scanners mean that travellers won’t have to scramble to remove their liquids and electronics at security, the 100ml limit implemented after 9/11 will remain in force. At the moment, containers no larger than 100ml must be stored in transparent, sealable plastic bags up to the overall maximum of one litre.

In the case of Spain, the following items are considered a liquid and are allowed to be carried in hand luggage in the corresponding plastic bag:

Perfume
Cream
Foam
Gel
Shampoo
Lotions
Jams
Toothpaste
Mixtures of liquid and solid and other items with a similar consistency

Liquid medications, special diets and baby formula needed during the trip can also be carried in hand luggage but passengers should be aware that they may be asked for a prescription or other justification for the item.

On October 5, the European Parliament overwhelmingly voted in favour of introducing a law which would force airlines to allow passengers to carry a standard cabin bag, free of charge. However, this can’t yet be enforced and Strasbourg is now asking the European Commission to push through common regulations on hand luggage that all low-cost carriers like Ryanair will have to follow.
