ARCHIVED - Toda una vida; esparto exhibition in Jumilla by Rafael Morcillo
The exhibition can be visited between the 17th January and 1st March 2020 in the Casa del Artesano in Jumilla
The tradition of weaving esparto grass in the Murcia Region dates back thousands of years, first the Phoenicians and then the Romans exporting this important raw material throughout the Mediterranean basin.
Before the invention of modern synthetic fibres, the strong and durable natural fibres of esparto lent themselves to a multitude of uses; ropes, footwear, household and agricultural items produced through the weaving of this fibrous grass and part of the everyday items used by residents in their daily lives.
Although there are relatively few master esparteros remaining in this modern era, there is an incresed interest in guarding the traditions of the past, and in Jumilla the casa del artesano is a centre from which those interested in esparto can extend their skills and share knowledge, regular esparto meetings enabling beginners and masters alike to sit together and enjoy their craft.
The centre also houses regular exhibitions and between 17th January and 1st March the skill of master espartero Rafael Morcillo can be viewed on Saturdays and Sundays.
Opening hours: weekends and public holidays 10.30 to 13.30 (except 1st and 6th January, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, 1st May and Christmas Day).
