ARCHIVED - Torre Pacheco agricultural company focusing on environmentally friendly route forwards
Agromediterránea in Dolores de Pacheco export fresh produce to 25 European countries
General awareness of plastics contamination in the world’s seas and oceans has risen significantly over the last few years and more and more business concerns are making efforts to combine the attractiveness of their products with measures to reduce the phenomenon, particularly in terms of the packaging they use.
One example of this can be found in the municipality of Torre Pacheco, where Agromediterránea, based in Dolores de Pacheco, have been growing their own crops and preparing vegetables while they are still in the fields after harvesting for well over 20 years. The company received a visit this week from local Mayor Antonio León, who witnessed for himself the most recent innovations introduced by Agromediterránea, including the fully automated 50,000-cubic-metre storage area and the vacuum cooling and refrigeration systems which ensure that all products remain fresh and in optimum condition until they reach the consumer.
The company exports vegetables to 25 countries in Europe, having recently added Finland Solvenia to its markets while at the same time expanding the client base at home in Spain. Throughout Europe customers value the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, exemplified in the BIO Sun&Vegs range: this was recently extended to include radishes packaged not in a bag or flow-pack but in a 200-gram jar with a lid, maintaining the product fresher for longer and making it easy to use.
As well as radishes, the company currently offers three other fully ecological products in the BIO Sun&Vegs range, namely courgettes, broccoli and iceberg lettuce. These all grown all year round and are always supplied fully fresh from certified ecological crop field, and are particularly attractive to a general public which is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of environmentally friendly packaging.
This kind of innovation helps to contribute to the circular economy as well as reducing plastics pollution in the sea, and generates economic activity in the areas where the plastic is collected. The activities of Agromediterránea have grown since the company was set up in 1997 to such an extent that they now generate employment for over 1,200 people, most of them living locally.
