ARCHIVED - Torre Pacheco council widening drains and water run-offs
Its mud, mud and more mud in Torre Pacheco as water channels are dug out and amplified
The measures are designed to reduce long-term flooding in the eventuality of Gota Fría storms.
It’s just over a year since the September Gota Fría of 2019 hit Torre Pacheco, causing widespread flooding both slightly inland in the municipality and around the Mar Menor as millions of litres of floodwater rushed downhill towards Los Alcázares and the coast.
Since then, many measures have been implemented and plans approved for larger-scale public works to pre-empt future storms and better control the evacuation of storm waters from the Campo de Cartagena agricultural area and countryside of Torre Pacheco, all part of a wider plan to protect the Mar Menor and improve the handling of storm water.
Recently the Council of Torre Pacheco and the Community of Irrigators of the Campo de Cartagena have been undertaking work to clean and re-open water channels and drainage channels to avoid damage by torrential rains, many of them infrastructures built by IRYDA 40 years ago, which over the years have deteriorated and even in some cases have ended up disappearing altogether under a mass of silt.
The Mayor of Torre Pacheco, said that his council is working together with the Community of Irrigators of Campo de Cartagena to jointly carry out actions in anticipation of possible rains this autumn in order to minimize potential risks and devastating losses for the farming community when water is unable to evacuate from the fields.
