ARCHIVED - Torrevieja supermarket takes the temperature of customers as Covid-19 precaution
Elderly shoppers in La Mata appreciate the sense of security provided
As measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in Spain become ever stricter it is reported that various supermarkets, including one in the Costa Blanca coastal town of Torrevieja (province of Alicante) are taking the temperature of customers before allowing them inside.
Most of the customers at the Unide store in La Mata are elderly northern Europeans from the UK, Germany and Scandinavia, along with a fair number of Spaniards who at this time of year are usually enjoying the warm spring weather in the Costa Blanca, and the policy has been introduced in order both to protect them and to make them feel safer when venturing out from their lockdowns in order to stock up on provisions. A staff member wearing protective clothing is in charge of using an infra-red thermometer at the entrance to the shop, and owner Joaquín Manuel Sánchez Leal explains that both the ten employees and the customers are grateful for his concern.
In fact, he goes so far as to joke that some people come along every day just to have their temperature taken, a consequence which would obviously go against the principles of the lockdown if it were to become a reality!
More seriously, he adds that most of his customers are elderly and live alone or with their partners, and are living the lockdown without close contact with their children and other relatives. In this situation, when they go out they need to feel that their wellbeing is of importance to those with whom they come into contact.
So far only three people have been denied entry to the supermarket after they were found to have temperatures of over 38 degrees since the precaution was first taken on 16th March, the first day of trading after the national state of emergency was announced.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
