ARCHIVED - Totana will remain in phase 1 for a further week
No further measures will be taken in Mazarrón and Totana for the moment
On Wednesday evening a meeting of the Covid Monitoring Commission for the Murcia Region, reviewed data gathered during the last 3 days and decided that at the moment it is not necessary to take any further measures in either Mazarrón or Totana to halt the spread of Covid-19.
In Lorca two bars found to be the focal point of the outbreaks have been temporarily closed down and all staff tested. Anyone who has drunk in either the pub Plaza or the pub La Confitería has been asked to put themselves forward for testing. Lorca council has closed park areas, sporting facilities and other areas in which groups of people could gather as well as cancelling all forthcoming cultural events planned for the remaining weeks of summer as a precautionary measure. Lorca currently has 17 positives, 8 of which are related to one of the pubs.In total there are 11 cases related to that one venue, the other three being in the municipalities of Alhama de Murcia, Murcia City and across the border in Huercal-Overa in neighbouring Almería.
The regional Health Ministry confidently expects the number of cases in the main outbreaks of the region to continue rising in the next few days, but believes that the focal points have been identified and these outbreaks are being controlled “medio controlados” not under control.
Totana now has 112 cases and the Atalayas outbreak in Murcia City has 91.
The situation in Mazarrón is a little more complicated as no central point of contagion has been identified, but the numbers of active cases has remained fairly stable at 21. As the numbers have not increased significantly, no further measures will be taken in the municipality at the moment. The council itself has cancelled all cultural events, closed playparks and increased the daily disinfections in the streets, and this weekend will once again limit its street markets to food stalls only in an attempt to limit the further spread of the virus.
The Mayor was today extremely critical of the regional Health Ministry for making public its concerns about the evolution of the virus, although it must be pointed out that 19 cases in one day is somewhat unusual and is justifiably a cause for concern.
The Mayor said that the municipality has experienced a significant surge in hotel booking cancellations, although some of this will also be due to the decision of the British Government to impose a 14 day quarantine and the subsequent cancellation of flights by Jet 2 and Tui.
The regional Health Minister said that the Covid Monitoring Commission will meet again on Monday to review the situation and can meet urgently should it become necessary. All data is reviewed every 4 hours as a matter of course and the Ministry is alert for any suspect figures which could indicate a new outbreak.
On Wednesday the regional health department notified 41 new cases for the last 24 hours, bringing the total of active cases up to 515.
The health system is still coping, although the number hospitalised has grown to 52.
This figure is being inflated by the number of positives amongst the irregular migrants who arrived in small boats at the weekend. 34 of these migrants have now tested positive.
They’re causing all sorts of problems for the authorities; more than 100 escaped from the port area where they are currently being quarantined last night; most were recaptured and there was also an unpleasant incident in the Santa Lucia hospital where a group of Covid-positive migrants started to pull down curtains and break furniture in frustration at their confinement. There has also been considerable disagreement between the regional and national authorities about where to house this volume of migrants; more about that next week when the Ed. Returns from a few days of rest.
In total the region has 463 positives in home isolation, 52 in hospital and 1 in intensive care.
The number of fatalities remains unchanged, as it has done for the whole of the last month.
However, it must be stressed that this is the highest level of cases for several weeks, so wearing masks and taking precautions is more important now than it was during the peak days of the pandemic.
