Two people investigated after fatal parasailing accident off Benidorm
Guardia Civil inquiry examines worsening weather and who was actually at the controls of the towing boat
Two people are under investigation following the death of a 66-year-old woman in a parasailing accident off Benidorm in August. The Guardia Civil has now completed its investigation into the incident and sent the case file to the Examining Section of the Benidorm Court of First Instance for the judicial process to continue.
One person, identified as the boat operator, is being investigated for alleged negligent homicide and causing injury. A second person faces investigation for suspected concealment after initially telling officers that he had been in command of the vessel.
The accident happened at around 6pm on Monday August 10, when the woman and a 47-year-old man were taking part in a tandem parasailing activity. They were being towed behind a boat when the cable connecting the parachute to the vessel broke.
The pair were then dragged by the wind before falling into the sea. The woman suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest after hitting the rocks and was taken to Benidorm port, where emergency teams tried to revive her for several minutes. She was later taken to hospital, where she died from her injuries.
The man also suffered several injuries and was taken to hospital, although his life was not in danger.
The Territorial Judicial Police Team of Altea examined several aspects of the incident, including the weather. Investigators found that conditions had deteriorated, with a storm and strong gusts of wind affecting the coastline. A red flag had been raised on the beach as the weather changed suddenly.
The wind carried the parasail from the Levante area towards Rincón de Loix, where it eventually struck the rocks. Witnesses described seeing the parachute lose control after the line snapped.
Another key part of the inquiry was establishing who was actually piloting the boat. A person linked to the company initially identified himself to officers as the skipper. During the investigation, he later admitted that he had not been at the controls and named another worker.
The Guardia Civil determined that the second man had been operating the boat. He held the necessary skipper’s qualification and training, but investigators found that he was not officially registered as crew for the company when the accident happened.
The first man is being investigated over the initial identification, while the person who was operating the boat is being investigated over the circumstances that may have contributed to the woman’s death and the injuries suffered by the other participant.
The court will now continue with the proceedings.
