ARCHIVED - Unanimous condemnation of vandalism at San Javier mosque
A fire was started at the door of the mosque and anti-Islamic graffiti was painted on the wall
An attack at the weekend on a mosque in San Javier, on the inland coast of the Mar Menor, has been roundly condemned by the Town Hall and the local Muslim community, whose representatives are adamant that any attempt to sow the seeds of hatred and religious intolerance will meet with failure.
The incident occurred at approximately 4.20 on Sunday morning, when a woman living close to the mosque called the Policía Local to report an explosion and a fire at the door of the building which is home to the “Centro de Culto Musulmán Assafwa”, in Calle Monseñor Carrión Valverde. Fortunately the flames were soon put out by police officers using the extinguisher in their patrol car and no-one was hurt, but their examination of the scene led to the discovery of an aerosol paint can and the words “Muerte al Islam” (Death to Islam) painted on the wall.
Efforts are now being made to trace the guilty party or parties, who are being assumed to be young men.
The response from the Town Hall has been rapid, rejecting such violence and reiterating the council’s support for the Muslim community as well as the ease with which they have contributed to San Javier becoming a multi-cultural municipality in recent years.
At the same time, the feeling among the Muslims themselves is that in no way is this kind of attack representative of the community as a whole, as in their experience there is a high degree tolerance for them among other residents. The mosque which was attacked has been in use for twelve years and this is the first such incident to have happened, according to sources quoted in the regional press.
Worship at the mosque has continued uninterrupted despite the vandalism suffered and local councillor Rubén Pérez maintains that one isolated incident will not be allowed to alter the way of life in San Javier. Meanwhile, bewildered worshippers are at a loss to explain the motive behind the attack, some dismissing it as a group of young people seeking to draw attention to themselves and all of them ruling out any notion that it will provoke any sort of reaction in kind.
