ARCHIVED - Valencia region develops Coronavirus drone scheme for rapid transport of medical material
Medical equipment, tests and urgent supplies can be supplied quickly and cheaply through drone transport
The scheme is one of a raft ideas selected by the Valencian regional government for use in the three provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón.
An innovative scheme to provide solutions for some of the logistical problems brought about by the coronavirus pandemic was successfully trialled on Monday in Valencia, where a team led by the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has developed a system to use drones for the transport of emergency materials, medications and laboratory samples.
The first such drone took just three minutes to complete a successful flight on Monday from Feria Valencia to the Hospital Arnau de Vilanova, a rapid journey made possible by the removal of hindrances such as congestion, traffic lights and the ins and outs of the Valencia road network. Travelling at a speed of 15 metres per second (or 54 kph) the drone carried a typical kit for a medical professional, consisting of a face mask, gloves, goggles, overalls and a rapid Covid testing kit.
The project at the Unversitat Politècnica was one of those selected by the regional government after ideas were sought in March, during the first wave of the pandemic, and as well as saving time it is also cheap and environmentally friendly, and avoids the need for human contact. At the official presentation of the new drone on Monday various scenarios were enacted, including not only the kit-carrying flight from Feria Valencia to the Hospital Arnau but also the distribution of equipment from the aerodrome of Siete Aguas to various rural districts and the transfer of healthcare material and biological samples from the Hospital Francesc de Borja in Gandia to the Solimar Daimús residence.
The UPV team which developed the drone for these uses has already been working on similar ideas with FISABIO and the Department of Health in Gandia since 2018, helping to improve communications between health centres and healthcare residences.
