article_detailDate Published: 03/06/2020ARCHIVED ARTICLEARCHIVED - Vigilance flights begin as Murcia enters peak fire season
Plan Infomur swung into action on June 1st
Each year the fire risk increases as the weather warms up and in the Region of Murcia the Plan Infomur focuses on early detection of forest fires, the aim being to decrease the area of forest consumed by fires and prevent the spread of fires over large areas by early detection.
During the summer months the regional government operates a vigilance plan which includes helicopter surveillance of areas prone to summer fires, as well as patrols by environmental agents and vigilance from strategically positioned "fire towers" in sensitive areas.
During this period the use of any cooking equipment or burning of agricultural prunings in the regional parks is prohibited and residents are requested to be conscious of the increased fire risk to themselves and other people through small actions such as throwing a cigarette butt out of a car window; 80% of all forest fires are caused by human negligence.
A few photographs here taken by the vigilance helicopter on 1st June as it flew over the Sierra del Roldán and La Muela and Cabo Tiñoso in Cartagena, clearly showing how the scrub is already drying out.
