ARCHIVED - Volunteer clean-up day at the Cabezo Gordo in Torre Pacheco: Sunday February 6
Free picnic lunch and litter picking in the Cabezo Gordo
On Sunday February 6, Torre Pacheco is hosting its annual clean-up and educational day of the Cabezo Gordo, the area surrounding the vast outcrop of rock which dominates the orchard landscape of this municipality. This event was originally planned for December 19 2021 but was postponed due to Covid.
Volunteers are invited to Cabezo Gordo from 10am to help clear away litter that is polluting the natural environment there. There will also be free fun events and activities afterwards suitable for all ages.
Cabezo Gordo is a grassy countryside area that is home to flora and fauna that are extinct in other parts of the Campo de Cartagena, and it is also the site of the unique archaeological site of La Sima de las Palomas, which has brought to light important remains of Neanderthal Man.
Unfortunately, litter and debris sully the natural landscape, meaning it falls to local residents and well-wishers to help tidy up the mountain.
Torre Pacheco Clean-up Day Schedule
- 10am: Explanation of the work system, organisation of the teams and distribution of the necessary materials
- 11.30am: Picnic lunch for participants, including a sandwich, fruit and water
- 12pm to 2pm: Varied activities, including climbing, zipwire, popular games, Geocaching Masterclass and Gymkhana, and a theatre show.
- 2pm: End of the activity
Location of Cabezo Gordo
From Torre Pacheco, take the F-22 towards Balsicas, then the F-26 towards Los Alcázares, and then the camino SIVt1, which is signposted for the Sima de las Palomas. Basically, you're heading for the foot of the huge rocky outcrop which dominates the orange plains.
