Volunteers clear more than a tonne of litter from Region of Murcia's natural areas
The Region of Murcia joined a nationwide effort that mobilised more than 13,700 volunteers

Volunteers across the Region of Murcia have removed more than a tonne of litter from the Region's natural spaces as part of the tenth edition of the "1m² against litter" campaign.
The initiative, run by the Libera Project in partnership with SEO/BirdLife and Ecoembes, and supported by Spain's regional governments, mobilised more than 13,700 volunteers nationwide this year.
In Murcia, 456 people took part in clean-ups across 33 locations, removing 1.1 tonnes of litter and logging 1,147 types of waste using the Basuraleza app.
The Region's 33 collection points made up 3.6% of the 919 sites cleared across Spain, while its volunteers accounted for 3.3% of the national total, placing Murcia among the more active communities in this year's campaign.
Clean-ups took place on beaches, dry riverbeds, in the mountains and across protected areas, including the El Valle y Carrascoy Regional Park, the Segura River area in Beniel and Las Amoladeras beach in Cartagena. Local councils, associations, schools, businesses and community groups all took part.
This year's campaign also ran for nine days, longer than previous editions, giving organisers more flexibility in planning activities and helping widen its reach, in line with similar European efforts such as Let's Clean Up Europe.
Data collected during the clean-ups feeds into the Litter Barometer, a tool that tracks the most common types of waste found in different environments. In Murcia, 54% of the litter collected was plastic, which is particularly damaging due to how long it lingers in the environment and the harm it can cause to wildlife.
