ARCHIVED - Volunteers collect over 2 tons of plastics and waste from the shore of the Mar Menor
Over 100 people gathered in El Carmolí on Sunday to take part in the event
Over 100 volunteers took part in an event organized by the Pacto por el Mar Menor platform group on Sunday, gathering at the marina in El Carmolí on the inland shore of the lagoon to clear away litter and rubbish from the coastline in commemoration of World Wetlands Day.
It is reported that the volunteers collected over 2,000 kilos of plastics and other waste which have accumulated on the shore of the Mar Menor over the last few months, much of it during the storms and serious flooding of September, December and late January. However, the weather on Sunday was perfect as the volunteers, armed with no more than gloves, bags and good intentions, set to work.
Among the items they collected were large sections of piping from the irrigated crop fields of the Campo de Cartagena, plastic trays, broken fishing nets and even a small boat. At the same time, the after-effects of Storm Gloria were still apparent, with large puddles preventing the group from reaching all of the area they had intended to cover and continuing to result in fresh water running into the Mar Menor, lowering its salinity still further.
