ARCHIVED - Weekly markets in Murcia return to full capacity with all stalls allowed to open
Advocates of relaxing the restriction point out that no such limit has been placed on shopping malls
As coronavirus infection rates continue to decrease in almost all of the 45 municipalities of the Region of Murcia a motion has been passed in the regional parliament to allow weekly street markets to operate at full capacity, with 100 per cent of stalls allowed to be put to use.
Until this week a limit of 75 per cent of capacity has been imposed on the street markets, but the regional newspaper La Opinión quotes Mabel Campuzano of the Vox political party as describing the limit on markets as an “error” in the handling of the pandemic. “We have data”, she is reported as saying, “we know where the infection rate increases and where it doesn’t”, adding that to target market traders, who offer their wares in the open air, is “an injustice”.
Sra Campuzano points out that no such restrictions have been imposed on the number of shops allowed to open in malls, although she does reiterate the need for social distancing to be maintained at outdoor markets.
