ARCHIVED - WHO advises against the use of Remdesivir in treating coronavirus
The corticosteroid dexamethasone receives the backing of the World Health Organization
Earlier this year the anti-viral drug Remdesivir was widely hailed as an important weapon in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, reducing mortality among serious cases and lessening the need for artificial respiration machines, but this week the World Health Organization has officially advised against its use in patients diagnosed with Covid-19.
The drug is manufactured by Gilead and has previously been used in the treatment of ebola, but test results published in the British Medical Journal lead to the conclusion that there is no reliable evidence to support its use in treating Covid-19. Four tests were carried out on 7,000 Covid patients admitted to hospital, and while the results do not show an absence of certain beneficial effects the WHO advises against its use due to the high cost and possible harm caused by it being administered intravenously.
However, the same organization continues to offer support to further clinical testing with the same drug while also recommending the use of dexamethasone, a corticosteroid medication which is used in the treatment of many complaints including rheumatic complaints and which is widely available on the international market, in treating serious cases of Covid-19. This drug has provided some of the most encouraging results so far obtained, although it has not received the same high-profile publicity as Remdesivir during the first wave of the pandemic.
