Why does Spain have different days for Mother's Day and Father's Day?
This is when Mother's Day and Father's Day are traditionally held in Spain, and why they are different from other countries
In many countries around the world, Father's Day and Mother's Day are celebrated on different dates, each with its own significance and history. Spain is no exception to this trend, with distinct dates for honoring fathers and mothers.
But why does Spain deviate from the tradition so many other countries when it comes to Mother's Day and Father's Dayof celebrating both parental figures on the same day? As per usual when it comes to Spanish holidays and observances, it's a mixture of cultural and religious factors that shape the holiday calendar.
Mother's Day in Spain
Similar to the United States, Mother's Day in Spain is celebrated on the first Sunday in May, and that is why the exact date changes from year to year. This chosen day, while not directly linked to any religious feast, serves as a dedicated occasion to honour maternal figures and their indispensable contributions to families and society.
The evolution of Mother's Day in Spain reflects broader societal changes and global influences. Until the 1960s, Mother's Day in Spain was celebrated on December 8, coinciding with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. This date, marking the conception of Mary without original sin, initially served as a day to honour mothers. However, as societal norms evolved and the significance of Mother's Day gained prominence worldwide, Spain shifted its observance to align with the international standard.
Now, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 is celebrated as a separate national 'festivo', or day off, in its own right.
Father's Day in Spain
In the UK and USA, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of every June. In Spain, Father's Day falls on March 19 every year, coinciding with the Feast of San José, or Saint Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus Christ in Christian tradition.
This date holds profound religious significance, honouring Joseph's role as a devoted father and protector. The celebration of Father's Day on this date intertwines faith with familial appreciation, enriching the observance with spiritual depth.
Saint Joseph embodies virtues of strength, guidance and paternal care, qualities cherished in fathers across Spain and beyond. By aligning Father's Day with the Feast of San José, Spain pays homage to the revered figure of Saint Joseph while also celebrating fatherhood in all its forms.
Despite the divergence in dates from many other countries, both Father's Day and Mother's Day in Spain serve as opportunities to express love, gratitude and appreciation for our parents.
