Work set to start soon on three Murcia medical centre upgrades
A €12.5 million investment will expand health centres serving more than 57,000 people in the Region
The Region of Murcia has given the green light to the expansion and renovation of three health centres, with building work is due to start before the end of the year in Alhama de Murcia, Santomera and Yecla.
The contracts have been awarded for a combined total of more than €12.5 million, after the Regional Government Council approved the spending in May. The projects have a three-year timescale, and the new buildings will be designed with sustainability and energy efficiency in mind.
They form part of the Primary Care Improvement Strategy 2023-2026 and the Primary Care Infrastructure Investment Plan 2022-2026, which aim to make health centres easier to reach and bring in new services and greater diagnostic capacity. Together the three centres serve more than 57,000 people.
In Alhama de Murcia, a €4.5 million project paid for with regional funds will double the current space with a new building of more than 3,800 square metres, spread over a basement and three floors. The first phase will see the municipal building attached to the centre demolished, as it currently houses some consulting rooms, before the extension goes up.
When it’s finished the centre will have 17 more consulting rooms, a physiotherapy room with three treatment rooms and the Primary Care Emergency Service (SUAP) on the ground floor. Mayor Rosa Sánchez explained that it’s a long-standing demand and that the growing population needs facilities suited to its needs.
Santomera’s €3.3 million project will take its medical centre from 1,817 to 2,627 square metres, adding consulting rooms and new services such as physiotherapy, dentistry and a women’s health unit. The Regional Government is paying 60% of the cost, with the remaining 40% coming from the Region of Murcia ERDF Programme 2021-2027.
In Yecla, the Este Mariano Yago health centre is getting a €4.7 million expansion that begins with a long annex and two extra modules, one at the end of the Pediatrics area and one beside Administration. The old building will then be remodelled, taking the space from 1,600 to more than 3,000 square metres.
