€132 million investment approved for Murcia-Lorca high-speed railway

Adif is installing 134 noise and environmental screens along 34.6 kilometres of the Murcia-Lorca route

A major €132 million project is set to bring 134 acoustic and environmental barriers to the high-speed railway between Murcia and Lorca. The project is part of the ongoing development of the Murcia-Almería high-speed rail line and will see screens installed along 34.6 kilometres of the route.

That represents around 57% of the approximately 60-kilometre Murcia-Lorca section.

Adif has now put the contract out to tender, with companies able to submit their bids until October 19. The estimated construction period is 19 months once the contract has been awarded.

The screens will be spread across several sections of the route. Thirty barriers covering a combined 9.7 kilometres will be installed between Nonduermas and Sangonera, followed by another 54 covering 11 kilometres between Sangonera and Totana.

Within Totana itself, 12 barriers will cover 2.2 kilometres, while 35 more will be installed between Totana and Lorca, covering a further 11.6 kilometres.

Three additional barriers will form part of the rail integration project in Lorca. The barriers will not all be identical. Acoustic studies will determine which type is most appropriate at each location, with four different solutions available.

These include sound-absorbing concrete, metallic screens, transparent methacrylate barriers and mixed structures combining different materials.

The project is designed to reduce the impact of the new railway on nearby communities while helping the high-speed line integrate into the landscape through which it passes.

The Murcia-Lorca section is part of the Murcia-Almería high-speed route, which will eventually extend for around 200 kilometres and provide a new rail connection between the two provincial capitals.

Adif is continuing work on several other parts of the Mediterranean Corridor project in the Region of Murcia. Construction of the railway platform is either complete or under way along the various sections, while work is also progressing on electrification between Murcia and Lorca.

This includes the Totana substation and autotransformer stations, as well as the overhead catenary system along the Murcia-Lorca route.

The contract for electrification of the Lorca-Almería section has also been awarded, while track-laying contracts covering the wider route have either already been awarded or are currently out to tender.
