Alhama trains up volunteer firefighters for the summer season
18 new recruits have joined the Alhama de Murcia Infomur 2023 plan on a voluntary basis

Between June 1 and September 30, eighteen volunteers will join the Alhama Civil Protection to provide valuable support to the municipality’s surveillance and fire prevention systems as part of the Infomur 2023 Plan.
The volunteers carry out mobile controls in the area’s so-called black spots, little pockets where the terrain makes it difficult for personnel manning the surveillance booths to monitor. Particular points of interest this summer are the Sierra Espuña, the shady area of Trasvase, Sierra de La Muela and the upper districts of Gebas and El Berro.
Sadly, each year, around 95% of forest fires are caused by carelessness, irresponsibility or arson, so Alhama City Council recommends the following:
- Do not throw cigarettes, matches or lighters on the ground.
- Only dispose of rubbish in authorised containers and bins.
- Only dispose of glass bottles in authorised recycling bins.
- Do not light a fire in the mountains, boulevards or ravines in times of risk.
- If you are going to light a fire, request the appropriate authorisation and exercise extreme caution throughout.
- In times of risk, do not use agricultural or forestry machinery or tools that can generate sparks.
- Comply with the restrictions on access to forestry areas during times of risk.
- Take extreme precautions if fires have to be lit as part of agricultural work.
Finally, if you spot a fire call 112 immediately.
With the addition of the new volunteers, the Civil Protection has taken the opportunity to remind the people of Alhama that wild fires of any kind are strictly prohibited: there is a ban on cooking in fields, forest and other areas of the countryside, which includes barbecues, stoves and portable kitchens.
Firefighters have also called for visitors to Sierra Espuña and Sierra de La Muela to take special care throughout the year, but particularly during summer months"in order to avoid unpleasant accidents in the natural environment".
