Here's your chance to EAT the Roman Theatre in Cartagena!

Cartagena's famous monument has been recreated in chocolate, giving visitors a very tasty new souvenir to take home

Fancy taking a bite out of one of Cartagena's most famous landmarks? You can now do exactly that, with the city's Roman Theatre recreated as a chocolate souvenir.

The unusual new creation has been produced by Cartagena confectionery Confitería San Vicente and joins a growing collection of edible souvenirs inspired by the city's history and identity.

The chocolate Roman Theatre has the backing of Cartagena City Council's Tourism Department and follows some of the confectioner's other creations, including its chocolate submarine and chocolates inspired by the city's famous Asiático coffee, shaped like the traditional cup.

Tourism Councillor Beatriz Sánchez del Álamo explained that Cartagena's identity is closely linked to its gastronomy as well as its heritage.

"Transforming our symbols into chocolate is an original and personal way to promote the city," she pointed out, adding that the idea gives visitors a souvenir to take home that could even tempt them back for another visit.

The new chocolate creation doesn't just look the part either. It comes in a special box with a viewer that allows you to admire the piece, along with historical information about the Roman Theatre and some of the most important symbols of ancient Carthago Nova.

The launch also coincides with the 25th anniversary of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas, the organisation behind many of the city's archaeological and heritage attractions.

Ms Sánchez del Álamo explained that the new souvenir brings together three important parts of Cartagena's tourism offer: heritage, gastronomy and promotion.

For Confitería San Vicente manager Antonio Sánchez, the Roman Theatre was a natural addition to the confectioner's collection.

"We already had the chocolate submarine and the Asiático-style chocolates, and we wanted to incorporate another of Cartagena's great symbols, the Roman Theatre," he explained.

Creating the piece required careful work to reproduce the main features of the ancient monument, with the aim of making Cartagena's history something visitors can quite literally enjoy with their taste buds.

Confitería San Vicente has been part of life in Cartagena since 1960 and has built up a reputation for combining traditional pastry-making with more inventive creations.

The confectioner's products also give visitors the chance to discover some of Cartagena's traditional treats, including crespillos and Mari Bruni, as well as the stories behind the city's Asiático and submarino.
