Camposol public spaces - Central Park
Some of the many open spaces in Camposol have been landscaped and cultivated while others are left to form wild environments
Central Park (Parque Central) is situated on the Camposol development’s Sector A and occupies the space between the Sector A Commercial Centre car park, the location of the Camposol Thursday market and the Camposol Medical Centre (Consultorio) on Calle Jerez de la Frontera. The park is probably best known as the site of the infants playground opened in November 2021.
The outer aprons of the park have been cultivated and have footpaths, gravelled areas with various plants and seating as well as the infant’s playground, the inner area of the park has been left as a wild habitat. Fir, palm and other trees are well established throughout the park (see image gallery below).
The infant’s playground is the main feature of Central Park and was realised after over 15 years of lobbying by parents for their children to have a dedicated area to play and have fun although the length of time taken to bring the playground to fruition has meant that many of the original children have grown up and have infants of their own! The playground is equipped with brightly coloured swings, slides, a see-saw, spring rocking horses, climbing frames and scramble nets. There is also a table and seating area, it is fenced off and has a child-friendly surface and it is available to infants and pre-school children accompanied by an adult.
The playground was opened and inaugurated on November 11 2021 by the Mayor of Mazarrón, delegate Councillors from the Council and some of the parents who had called for the facility over the years, its inauguration coinciding with the opening of the 5-a-side football pitch on Sector D of Camposol.
Like other green areas in Camposol the park is mostly maintained by residents volunteer gardening groups, in this case the Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group. These volunteers can be regularly seen tending to the plants, maintaining the facilities and working on landscaping projects.
Central Park is overlooked from the south by the Camposol Medical Centre (Consultorio) and the currently under construction private hospital which is expected to be open by mid-2024 and will be equipped with 38 beds, three operating theatres and six surgeries, as well as a 24-hour emergency service. It will offer more than 40 specialties and health services, including general medicine, surgery, nursing, cardiology, pneumology, gynaecology, dermatology, geriatrics and radio diagnostic equipment (Tac, ultrasound, X-rays, and a magnetic resonance laboratory).
Central Park is also the location of the dog recreation area which was opened on April 3 2022 by the Councillor for Animal Welfare, Silvia García, for the enjoyment of dogs and owners alike. The dog park was a result of a citizen budget participation scheme by Mazarrón Council in 2022 and is a fully fenced off site allowing dogs to be let off leash, containing dog training and agility apparatus including a tunnel, seesaw, jumping hoop, and ramps.
