New veterinary voucher proposed to help struggling pet owners in Torrevieja
The proposal would help cover treatment costs for pets belonging to Torrevieja's most vulnerable residents
A motion put forward by Sueña Torrevieja proposes creating a Municipal Veterinary Voucher to help residents on lower incomes cover the cost of basic veterinary care for their pets.
Under the proposal, aid would be granted based on social and economic criteria, with priority given to low-income households, pensioners with reduced incomes, single-parent families, unemployed people, those receiving social benefits and residents in a proven situation of particular vulnerability.
Mr Samper, spokesperson for Sueña Torrevieja, explained that the initiative responds to a growing problem in the municipality.
"The rising cost of living and veterinary care is causing some families to struggle to afford necessary treatments," he said.
"The goal is to offer responsible support to those who need it most, protect animal welfare and prevent abandonment."
Within the limits set by the regulations, the voucher could cover routine consultations, vaccinations, microchip identification, deworming, basic diagnostic tests, treatment for illness or accidents, prescribed medication, sterilisations and other interventions needed to safeguard an animal's welfare.
"We are presenting this proposal because we believe in a local government that is responsive to local needs, capable of addressing specific problems and improving the daily lives of our residents," Mr Samper concluded.
"If the other political groups now recognise its importance, we will work to reach the best possible agreement, without compromising the social and progressive nature of the Veterinary Voucher."
