Travel discounts scrapped in Alicante this week
Train tickets in Alicante city will now go back to their old 2022 prices
Starting this Thursday January 23, Renfe will no longer offer free passes or discounted tickets for commuter and medium-distance trains in Alicante. The government’s attempt to extend these bonuses, which have been in place since 2022, was rejected in Congress, meaning those subsidies are coming to an end.
If you’ve already got a pass, though, don’t worry - those will still be valid until April 30 for Cercanías and Media Distancia services. Passes for Avant trains issued before January 22 will remain valid until the tickets are used up.
From Thursday onward, all passengers will be able to buy tickets and passes at the old rates (from before September 2022) at ticket machines and offices, with other sales channels following soon after.
Transport subsidies in Alicante are taking a hit after Congress shot down two of the government's key decrees. Political party Junts was a key player in blocking these, as they disagreed with several measures included in the bills.
The transport bonus cuts are just one part of the bigger picture. The rejection of these decrees also means other measures, like pension increases, minimum vital income boosts, aid for those affected by the DANA storms and subsidies for electric vehicles and energy efficiency projects, have been scrapped.
But it’s not all bad news for public transport. In the Valencian Community, tram fares won’t go up this Thursday, as the current discounts will continue until January 31. Plus, the Ministry of Transport has confirmed that they’ll keep the 50% discount and free rides for young people until June 30, although the region will have to cover the full cost from now on.
The regional government had already planned for this, but it remains uncertain whether they’ll be responsible for the entire cost of these discounts or if they’ll still get that 30% subsidy from the central government.
