A 48-year-old British man who became lost while hiking on the Peñón de Ifach, Calpe, has been rescued after spending the night in the mountains. The alarm was raised around 12.50pm on Thursday June 19, when the hiker called emergency services to report that he was unable to find his way back.
Specialist teams from the Alicante Provincial Fire Consortium were quickly mobilised, including the Alpha 01 rescue helicopter and the mountain rescue group (GER). The man was located and airlifted to safety just before 2.45pm, landing at the helipad in Calpe. He was found to be in good health and did not need any medical treatment.
Although the incident ended well, authorities are again reminding people of the need to be cautious when walking in mountainous terrain. Trails in natural parks like the Peñón de Ifach can change quickly, and even experienced walkers can find themselves disoriented.
It’s not clear how the hiker lost his way, but his quick call for help and the fast response from emergency services meant that the situation didn’t escalate.
Rescue teams praised the man's calm reaction and noted the importance of always carrying a fully charged phone, plenty of water, and informing someone of your route before heading out.
The Peñón de Ifach is one of the most iconic natural landmarks on the Costa Blanca, offering spectacular views but also presenting challenges for hikers, especially in poor light or unfamiliar conditions.
Thankfully, on this occasion, the only lasting impact was a bit of adventure and a timely reminder to stay safe out on the trails.
