Meningitis claims the life of Alicante teen as UK outbreak rings alarm bells

Contact tracing is underway in Dénia following the tragic death of the 17-year-old

The death of a 17-year-old girl from meningitis in Alicante has sent shockwaves through her local community, with health authorities moving quickly to prevent any further spread of the disease.

The teenager, from Benissa, died on Monday after being rushed to hospital in Dénia in the early hours of the morning. She was admitted to intensive care but passed away later that day. According to the regional health department, protocols to trace and treat anyone who may have been in close contact were activated immediately, even before laboratory results confirmed the diagnosis.

The news has had a big impact in Benissa, where the teenager was well known. She had been involved in preparations for the upcoming Puríssima Xiqueta festivities and was also a member of the local basketball club. People close to her said she had started to feel unwell over the weekend but believed it was nothing more than a cold.

Medical experts say that early symptoms of meningitis can be difficult to spot. Dr Valentina Prieto explained that the illness is usually spread through respiratory droplets such as coughing, sneezing or close personal contact. She pointed out that common warning signs include fever, headaches, vomiting and sometimes a rash, with more serious symptoms developing as the condition progresses.

Health authorities have stressed the importance of vaccination, along with the use of preventative antibiotics for those who may have been exposed. They also advised that extra care should be taken by people with untreated sinus or ear infections, as these can increase the risk of complications.

While cases of bacterial meningitis are relatively rare in the Valencian Community, with around 100 reported each year, officials noted that vaccination rates have dropped in recent years, which could increase the risk of outbreaks.

The situation in Spain comes at a time when meningitis has also been making headlines in the UK. Earlier this month, an outbreak described as unprecedented led to the deaths of two young people in Kent. Around 29 confirmed or suspected cases were linked to the cluster, prompting a national response and a targeted vaccination campaign.

According to the UK Health Security Agency, the peak of that outbreak has now thankfully passed.
