ARCHIVED - 21st June to 4th July, amberfish gastronomic event at 10 restaurants in Águilas
The greater amberjack is caught in Águilas using traditional almadraba fishing techniques
The species of fish known as Seriola dumerili has a great many names in English, including greater amberjack, great amberfish, allied kingfish, greater yellowtail, jenny lind, reef donkey, rock salmon and yellow trevally, but in the south-west of the Region of Murcia it is known simply as “lecha” and is one the subject of a gastronomic promotional campaign currently being held in the municipality of Águilas at ten local restaurants.
The predatory ray-finned fish is featured in the “Saborea la Lecha de la Costa de Águilas” event, part of a campaign to raise awareness of the traditional “almadraba” fishing technique and the catches it produces, from Monday 21st June to Sunday 4th July at the following establishments: La Veleta, Arrecife, Refugio de Juanfran, Casa Bartolo, Mari luz, El Paso, El Tiburón, Zoco del Mar, Costa Azul and La Chimenea. Each restaurant will prepare its own dish featuring the Lecha (also known as Pez Limón, or lemon fish), making the most of the tasty (and healthy) white flesh of the species in a variety of aperitifs and first courses.
The price of the menus featuring these dishes ranges from 20 to 60 euros per head, and the event is being welcomed as a resumption after the worst of the Covid pandemic of the gastronomic promotions which have been held regularly in Águilas in recent years.
